Children aged 17 or younger will face a lifelong ban on buying cigarettes, as the Tobacco and Vapes Bill clears Parliament.<\/p>\n
Both the Commons and Lords have settled on a final draft of the \u00ab\u00a0landmark\u00a0\u00bb legislation that aims to stop anyone born after 1 January 2009 from taking up smoking to create a smoke-free generation.<\/p>\n
When it gets royal assent, ministers will also have new powers to regulate tobacco, vaping and nicotine products, including their flavours and packaging.<\/p>\n
It is part of a series of measures aimed at tackling the health effects of smoking, one of the UK’s leading causes of preventable death, disability and ill health.<\/p>\n
Vaping will be banned in cars carrying children, in playgrounds and outside schools and at hospitals, expanding smoke-free laws.<\/p>\n
Vaping would still be allowed outside hospitals a bid to support those trying to quit.<\/p>\n
Outdoor hospitality venues like pub gardens and wider open spaces such as beaches and private outdoor spaces are not included in the plans.<\/p>\n
People will also be able to continue smoking and vaping in their homes.<\/p>\n
Health minister Baroness Merron told the Lords on Monday: \u00ab\u00a0This afternoon marks the end of this Bill’s journey throughout Parliament.<\/p>\n
\u00ab\u00a0It is a landmark Bill, it will create a smoke-free generation.<\/p>\n
\u00ab\u00a0It is, in fact, the biggest public health intervention in a generation and I can assure all noble Lords it will save lives.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n
Lord Naseby, a Conservative former MP, said the Tobacco and Vapes Bill \u00ab\u00a0does upset a great many people in that industry\u00a0\u00bb, including retailers.<\/p>\n
He added: \u00ab\u00a0What we really need is a proper understanding of how we educate people not to take up smoking.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n
