{"id":8865,"date":"2025-07-08T13:31:00","date_gmt":"2025-07-08T13:31:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/placedesnations.org\/index.php\/2025\/07\/08\/support-group-for-mums-from-different-ethnicities\/"},"modified":"2025-07-08T13:31:00","modified_gmt":"2025-07-08T13:31:00","slug":"support-group-for-mums-from-different-ethnicities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/placedesnations.org\/index.php\/2025\/07\/08\/support-group-for-mums-from-different-ethnicities\/","title":{"rendered":"Support group for mums from different ethnicities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A weekly group aimed at supporting mothers from different ethnicities will launch after one mum said she \u00ab\u00a0never fitted in\u00a0\u00bb at other groups.<\/p>\n<p>Carolyn Nansubuga, a Cheltenham mother-of-four, attended several groups following the birth of her youngest child, now 20 months, but said she struggled as she \u00ab\u00a0never had anything in common with the other mums\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>Lives of Colour, a Gloucestershire-based race equity charity, will launch the Mothers of Colour group at Aspire Foundation, Cheltenham on Thursday, in partnership with the NHS perinatal maternity unit.<\/p>\n<p>Florence Nyasamo, charity founder, said the partnership will allow the health needs of mothers from all ethnicities to be met.<\/p>\n<p>National audit programme \u00ab\u00a0Mothers and Babies: Reducing Risk through Audits, External\u00a0\u00bb (MBRRACE-UK) found maternal deaths among black women were nearly three times higher compared with those of white women in 2020-22.<\/p>\n<p>The Mothers of Colour group will cover newborn care, mental wellness, and maternal health.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Nansubuga said, at the sessions, she hopes to meet mothers who \u00ab\u00a0understand the cultural nuances\u00a0\u00bb she experiences after not \u00ab\u00a0fitting in\u00a0\u00bb previously.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0Groups are meant to give you rest from the mundane things of motherhood you&rsquo;ve been going through at home so, when you go there, you have to feel welcome,\u00a0\u00bb she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0But it&rsquo;s not just me, even my baby would think &lsquo;I don&rsquo;t look like everybody else here&rsquo;.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0When I heard about this group starting up I was super excited because, finally, we have the chance to attend a baby group and be ourselves.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Ms Nyasamo said it can be hard for women who have moved from another country to understand the \u00ab\u00a0small nuances\u00a0\u00bb at groups in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0It&rsquo;s nice to go into a space where you can just be,\u00a0\u00bb she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0We know with the NHS partnership, if we need a midwife or health visitor to come and have a conversation, then we&rsquo;ve already got those connections.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0Whatever the women will ask for, we&rsquo;ll do our best to make sure their needs are met.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Mothers of Colour is open to women of all ethnicities.<\/p>\n<p>Follow BBC Gloucestershire on Facebook, X and Instagram.
