{"id":9559,"date":"2025-12-12T12:05:32","date_gmt":"2025-12-12T12:05:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/placedesnations.org\/index.php\/2025\/12\/12\/plea-after-girl-13-died-copying-social-media-trend\/"},"modified":"2025-12-12T12:05:32","modified_gmt":"2025-12-12T12:05:32","slug":"plea-after-girl-13-died-copying-social-media-trend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/placedesnations.org\/index.php\/2025\/12\/12\/plea-after-girl-13-died-copying-social-media-trend\/","title":{"rendered":"Plea after girl, 13, died copying social media trend"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The mother of a girl who died while copying a \u00ab\u00a0horrible\u00a0\u00bb social media trend is calling for children to be taught about the dangers of solvent abuse.<\/p>\n<p>Sonia Hopkin was left \u00ab\u00a0heartbroken\u00a0\u00bb after the death of her 13-year-old daughter, Tiegan Jarman, who was found unresponsive in her bedroom in Thurmaston, Leicestershire, on 6 March.<\/p>\n<p>She died while taking part in an online trend called chroming, copying videos she had seen on TikTok, Mrs Hopkin said.<\/p>\n<p>A petition has now been launched calling for mandatory lessons about solvent abuse to be introduced in schools.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs Hopkin, who lives in Leicester, said Tiegan had been pronounced dead at the scene after she was found unconscious in her father&rsquo;s home.<\/p>\n<p>The 45-year-old believes her \u00ab\u00a0outgoing and funny\u00a0\u00bb daughter was taking part in a trend where people sniff or inhale toxic fumes, which she had seen on TikTok.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs Hopkin, a healthcare assistant at Leicester Royal Infirmary, said she had broken down in tears when she found out what had happened to her daughter.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0When you hear other stories in the papers, you always think it&rsquo;s someone else&rsquo;s family, never your own,\u00a0\u00bb she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0It&rsquo;s just the worst nightmare. I was heartbroken and I&rsquo;ve been like that ever since.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Mrs Hopkin now wants to raise awareness of the \u00ab\u00a0dangers of this horrible trend\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to calling for lessons about solvent abuse, the petition also asks for regulations requiring manufacturers to add warnings on their packaging to be enforced.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs Hopkin said: \u00ab\u00a0We&rsquo;re hoping it can be taught in schools, not just the dangers of household chemicals, but the dangers of the internet as well.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0We just want people to be aware so no-one else has to go through this horrible tragedy.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Mrs Hopkin also called on TikTok to do more to stop actions, such as chroming, from becoming trends.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0It&rsquo;s amazing that these videos aren&rsquo;t taken down,\u00a0\u00bb she said. \u00ab\u00a0I can&rsquo;t understand why anyone would want to share that kind of rubbish.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0One video would be bad, but the fact it has become a trend is unbelievable. It shouldn&rsquo;t be available on the internet.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>The British Aerosol Manufacturers&rsquo; Association said products must already have several warning statements on packaging, but added a new message using \u00ab\u00a0better language\u00a0\u00bb to explain risks would be introduced in 2026.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for TikTok said: \u00ab\u00a0We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident and our thoughts are with the family.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0Content promoting dangerous challenges is not allowed on TikTok, and we proactively removed 99.8% of videos that violated our policies on this issue before they were reported to us.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0Searches for this particular challenge are blocked and we have found no evidence of it ever having been a trend on our platform.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Follow BBC Leicester on Facebook, on X, or on Instagram.
