{"id":9692,"date":"2026-01-23T06:33:59","date_gmt":"2026-01-23T06:33:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/placedesnations.org\/index.php\/2026\/01\/23\/maternity-services-rated-inadequate-at-two-hospitals\/"},"modified":"2026-01-23T06:33:59","modified_gmt":"2026-01-23T06:33:59","slug":"maternity-services-rated-inadequate-at-two-hospitals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/placedesnations.org\/index.php\/2026\/01\/23\/maternity-services-rated-inadequate-at-two-hospitals\/","title":{"rendered":"Maternity services rated inadequate at two hospitals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Maternity services at a trust have again been rated inadequate following unannounced inspections by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).<\/p>\n<p>The health watchdog carried out inspections in June and July last year at Bedford Hospital and Luton and Dunstable Hospital (L&amp;D).<\/p>\n<p>It found that only minimal improvements had been made, with the services remaining in breach of regulations around staffing and safe care and treatment.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which runs both hospitals, said it was sorry where \u00ab\u00a0our service has fallen short\u00a0\u00bb and it was now delivering improvements.<\/p>\n<p>Chief executive David Carter said that \u00ab\u00a0since last summer&rsquo;s inspection we have strengthened staffing and senior clinical oversight, expanded staff development and wellbeing support\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>The inspections were carried out last summer by the CQC following improvements it had told them to make.<\/p>\n<p>In September last year more follow-up inspections were carried out, but maternity services at both hospitals were again rated inadequate overall.<\/p>\n<p>Carolyn Jenkinson, CQC deputy director of hospitals in the East of England, said: \u00ab\u00a0We were deeply concerned that improvements in maternity services were happening too slowly, with little change since our previous inspection.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>She said the \u00ab\u00a0triage service was frequently understaffed\u00a0\u00bb and at Bedford around a quarter of calls went unanswered or abandoned by the caller due to wait times.<\/p>\n<p>At Luton and Dunstable Hospital, women experienced delays to elective caesarean sections, as well as induction of labour.<\/p>\n<p>Jenkinson added: \u00ab\u00a0We also saw frequent diversions to other hospitals due to staffing shortages, which may lead to distress for women who had made specific plans at their chosen hospital.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Inspectors found that at both hospitals the service had many out-of-date policies and clinical guidelines, including those covering baby abduction and sepsis management.<\/p>\n<p>Carter said that, since the inspection last summer, the trust had \u00ab\u00a0opened state of the art maternity facilities in our new Acute Services Block at the L&amp;D\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>At Bedford, he said: \u00ab\u00a0We&rsquo;ve introduced a dedicated telephone triage midwife, new &lsquo;mini switchboard&rsquo; phone triage service and a private triage area to improve access, privacy and dignity.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Follow Beds, Herts and Bucks news on BBC Sounds, Facebook, Instagram and X.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Maternity services at a trust have again been rated inadequate following unannounced inspections by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).
