{"id":9719,"date":"2026-01-28T17:32:17","date_gmt":"2026-01-28T17:32:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/placedesnations.org\/index.php\/2026\/01\/28\/we-werent-perfect-says-bogus-covid-lab-accused\/"},"modified":"2026-01-28T17:32:17","modified_gmt":"2026-01-28T17:32:17","slug":"we-werent-perfect-says-bogus-covid-lab-accused","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/placedesnations.org\/index.php\/2026\/01\/28\/we-werent-perfect-says-bogus-covid-lab-accused\/","title":{"rendered":"&lsquo;We weren&rsquo;t perfect&rsquo;, says bogus Covid lab accused"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An ex-politician accused of running a bogus coronavirus testing firm has told a court he \u00ab\u00a0never said we were absolutely bob-on\u00a0\u00bb in its operation.<\/p>\n<p>Faisal Shoukat, who served as a Labour councillor on Calderdale Council, is on trial at Bradford Crown Court along with four others involved in RT Diagnostics &#8211; including the company&rsquo;s co-director, former justice minister Shahid Malik.<\/p>\n<p>The defendants are accused of running a fraudulent business and public nuisance. Mr Shoukat, a pharmacist from Halifax, and Mr Malik, from Burnley, are also accused of money laundering.<\/p>\n<p>The defendants have denied all of the charges.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors have alleged Halifax-based RT Diagnostics \u00ab\u00a0purported to be a testing laboratory\u00a0\u00bb when in reality tests were \u00ab\u00a0dumped in a room\u00a0\u00bb with customers sent fake negative results for the deadly virus, thereby endangering people&rsquo;s health.<\/p>\n<p>Medical safety inspectors previously told the trial the firm&rsquo;s laboratory at Park Works \u00ab\u00a0looked like a building site\u00a0\u00bb, with the number of positive tests it returned also described as \u00ab\u00a0suspiciously low\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday Mr Shoukat, 39, was questioned about a video published by The Sun newspaper which showed employees leaving a box of allegedly untested samples in a quarantine room where a cement mixer had also been left.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Shoukat disagreed with a suggestion from prosecutor Jonathan Sandiford that such a move was \u00ab\u00a0unhygienic\u00a0\u00bb, telling jurors: \u00ab\u00a0It was waste and the room was being refurbished. The sample itself was sealed.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0I can assure you that samples weren&rsquo;t being dumped,\u00a0\u00bb he added.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Shoukat said staff using scissors and craft knives to open test kits was \u00ab\u00a0how we would typically open up a sample\u00a0\u00bb and commonplace among other laboratories.<\/p>\n<p>He also defended procedures at the site, which the prosecution alleged fell short of what was told to an accreditation body in order for the company to be able to advertise itself as a test provider and generate income.<\/p>\n<p>The trial previously heard how RT Diagnostics made \u00a36.674m in just 31 days between 16 May and 16 June 2021.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0As the procedure became busier we developed, our dealings had to change,\u00a0\u00bb said Mr Shoukat.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0It&rsquo;s been framed that a bunch of young men sat around with craft knives. You have a sample opening room with employees wearing PPE opening samples.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Mr Shoukat said there was \u00ab\u00a0no hoodwinking\u00a0\u00bb of the accreditation body, UKAS (United Kingdom Accreditation Service).<\/p>\n<p>Asked why the business did not put a pause on its operations given its challenges, he replied: \u00ab\u00a0Hindsight is a wonderful thing. We tried our best to cope, we weren&rsquo;t perfect.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0I have never said we were absolutely bob-on.
