{"id":9998,"date":"2026-04-12T13:49:48","date_gmt":"2026-04-12T13:49:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/placedesnations.org\/index.php\/2026\/04\/12\/streeting-denies-changing-pay-deal-for-resident-doctors\/"},"modified":"2026-04-12T13:49:48","modified_gmt":"2026-04-12T13:49:48","slug":"streeting-denies-changing-pay-deal-for-resident-doctors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/placedesnations.org\/index.php\/2026\/04\/12\/streeting-denies-changing-pay-deal-for-resident-doctors\/","title":{"rendered":"Streeting denies changing pay deal for resident doctors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Health Secretary Wes Streeting has told the BBC the government \u00ab\u00a0categorically\u00a0\u00bb did not change its deal with resident doctors to end ongoing industrial action over pay and jobs.<\/p>\n<p>He also said he wanted to meet the \u00ab\u00a0organ grinders\u00a0\u00bb from the British Medical Association (BMA) resident doctors&rsquo; committee for further negotiations &#8211; but claimed they had \u00ab\u00a0point blank refused\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Jack Fletcher, chair of the committee, said in response that one or two-year settlements were discussed in negotiations and \u00ab\u00a0at the very last minute\u00a0\u00bb the government insisted \u00ab\u00a0a three-year deal was the only option, with reduced investment\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>The current six-day walkout in England is set to end at 06:59 on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement to the BBC, Fletcher also said the BMA resident doctors&rsquo; committee remained \u00ab\u00a0open and willing to meet with the health secretary\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>He added that throughout this dispute, the BMA has \u00ab\u00a0negotiated in good faith with a genuine desire to reach a resolution\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>Streeting told the BBC&rsquo;s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg programme that resident doctors \u00ab\u00a0had a 28.9% pay rise within the first weeks of this Labour government\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0There&rsquo;s a deal on the table that would have given them an average 4.9% more for this year, 7.1% for some of the lowest-paid doctors.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Despite receiving pay rises worth 33% over the past four years, the BMA argues that doctors are still being paid a fifth less than they were in 2008 once inflation is taken into account.<\/p>\n<p>Further addressing the union&rsquo;s accusation that the deal had been changed at the last minute, Streeting told Victoria Derbyshire, standing in for Kuenssberg, this would not be in his \u00ab\u00a0interest or the government&rsquo;s\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>The health secretary said either the BMA \u00ab\u00a0didn&rsquo;t read the detail\u00a0\u00bb of the deal or \u00ab\u00a0faced with that enormous committee\u00a0\u00bb it was \u00ab\u00a0more convenient to blame the government\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>He also said: \u00ab\u00a0We&rsquo;ve gone as far as we can, I&rsquo;m never going to shut the door to the BMA, I&rsquo;m not pretending I&rsquo;ve solved all of their problems in less than two years.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0The BMA need to stop pretending that I can, there has to be some give and take.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>The interview came hours after the health secretary published a letter on X that he had sent to the doctors&rsquo; union, in which he expressed \u00ab\u00a0disappointment and frustration\u00a0\u00bb about the latest walkout.<\/p>\n<p>He wrote that \u00ab\u00a0most of the deal remains on the table\u00a0\u00bb, but he said the \u00ab\u00a0financial and operational impact of [the BMA&rsquo;s] latest strikes has made it impossible for us to bring forward 1,000 of the 4,500 extra training places to this year\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Health Secretary Wes Streeting has told the BBC the government \u00ab\u00a0categorically\u00a0\u00bb did not change its deal with resident doctors to end ongoing industrial action over pay and jobs.
